IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Adriana
Torres
February 16, 1945 – November 17, 2021
Adriana Torres, adored woman, loving mother, and grandmother (sort of) passed away peacefully on November 17 th , 2021, at the age of 76. Adriana was born in Honduras—officially her birthday is listed as February 16 th , 1945, but that's only because of a clerical error. Go figure. Eventually, like all of the cool kids did in the 1970's, she made her way to the United States and through sheer force of will, a little bit of time, perseverance, and the total patience of a saint, brought along her first 3 children (Mirna Guzman, Iris Romero and Adonay Romero). Somewhere along the way, she had a fourth kid (Eliana Diaz) and loved to brag nonstop about how she was her miracle child.
She left behind a very large, colorful, and dysfunctional family that she was both simultaneously annoyed by and very proud of. Adriana was world-famous for her love of the color red, not holding back her opinion and a knack for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth, even if it wasn't what you wanted to hear, and my God did she love to remind you about it. It was the school of hard knocks with her and yes, we were told many, many times just how hard she worked AND how many jobs she had all while being (for all intents and purposes) a single mother, so suck it up folks.
She loved to dote on every single person that would walk in through her front door, especially the ones who showed up with a nice smile and some delicious treats. Bonus points if you tried to converse in Spanish with her and watched her favorite Latin soap operas with her. Her hobbies included yelling at TV whenever her favorite show is on, dancing around the house until she made herself dizzy, playing the same four games over and over on her tablet, and constantly reminding her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids that (and I quote): "Yo no soy abuela de nadie!" (Translation: "I ain't nobody's grandma!").
Adriana also had a passion for the finer things in life, such as drinking "su cafecito con leche y un pancito" (Translation: "Coffee with milk and some sweet bread") every morning while voicing her utter contempt for the Republican Party, shopping around for the best sales and deals at yard/garage sales and the Dollar Store, gallivanting around the world with her impressive collection of adorable hats and scarves, increasing her collection of all things soft and fuzzy (she especially loved fuzzy socks and gloves) and showing off her impeccable taste in fashion by dressing up in so many layers of clothing that it would make a mountain climber hide their head in shame. She was also a master chef in the kitchen. She was adamant about seasoning everything, thoroughly cooked everything to complete perfection and more than anything, loved to criticize her children's cooking because what mother doesn't do that? Finally, she was a supremely talented tailor/dressmaker. Her ability to create overly elaborate yet gorgeous dresses and gowns with only the barest of minimums was matched by her fervent and fanatical desire to see everyone she loved dressed up to the nines , no matter how uncomfortable the fabric material may be or how embarrassed you may feel about wearing it in public. Deep down, in the recesses of her soul, she was a true fashionista. Eat your heart out Naomi Campbell.
With all of that said and done, she was genuine to a fault, a cute little pussycat at heart (or a lion if you were brave/stupid enough to piss her off) and yet she sugar coated nothing. She endured countless trials and tribulations with her iron will, strength of a rock, mental fortitude stronger than the steel used to build Fort Knox and the marked resilience of a woman determined to make the absolute best of her life, regardless of the hand she was dealt with in life. Adriana was as bright and optimistic as the sun, beautiful as the moon at night, and dazzling and unique as the stars that line the sky. She will always be loved and remembered, and will be very much missed by her surviving family, which include illustrious names such as her children: Mirna Guzman, Iris Romero (Yoli), Adonay Romero (Nay), and Eliana Diaz (Elianita), her son-in-law Luis Guzman, grandchildren: Adriana Martinez (Saylin), Marcela Martinez (Marcelita), Santos Martinez (San), Rafael Gonzales, Luis Guzman (Luisito), and Jeanette Guzman (Jeanesita), and her great-grandchildren: Ivette Games, Kobe Romero, Adriana Romero (La Loquita), Iris Romero (La Gordita), and Luca Guzman.
