Aileen Redmond passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2012 at the age of 90. Aileen was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1922. She was a striking brunette with a love of high heels and cashmere sweaters. As a teenager she volunteered as a plane spotter identifying wayward German bombers off the Irish coast. After the war, she met and married a rough Irish lad straight out of the British Army, whose family coincidently lived across the street from her own .
With the clans of Cummins and Redmond now joined, she raised two children. In a time when it was frowned upon for a married woman with children to work away from the home, Aileen would pretend to be single in order to help bring bread to the table. She provided well for her family fortifying them with strength, charity and optimism. She had a genius for fantastic desserts, which she would use to compel her children to eat their vegetables.
Aileen was courageous in the way great mothers are and when the Irish economy failed, decided with her husband to emigrate to America and establish a bridgehead. Separated from her children for more than a year, she and Christopher eventually succeeded and in 1969 the year America landed on the moon, Aileen Redmond and her family landed in America.
Aileen had many jobs over the years and eventually settled into a career as a patient and health insurance manager at a hospital in Rochester, NY. After retirement in 1980 Aileen joined the rest of her family in Virginia enjoying a close and loving relationship with her children and grandchildren.
Aileen will be remembered for her outrageous sense of humor, her gifted story telling and her love and devotion to family. Most of all, Aileen was a Celtic woman, connected forever to the green land that bore her. Aileen is survived by her husband of 65 years, Christopher, her daughter Dagny, son David, and her grandsons Declan and Kieran.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176. Burial will be private.
