ALEXIS FRANCIS LAHOZ VERZOSA
28 May 1948 – 17 October 2024
Loving husband to Cecilia Cabañero-Verzosa or Caby and father to Alexandra, Alex Verzosa (76) from Quezon City, Philippines and Virginia, USA passed away peacefully on 17 October 2024 with his loved ones praying the rosary with him.
"Hope" – is the one word that describes how Alex lived his life. Alex had been ill since he was 7 years old, when he contracted glomerular nephritis. But he lived his life to the fullest, never allowing despair, or anxiety, to get in the way. He cherished each single day of life he was given.
As a young civil engineer in the Philippines, in the 70s, he led the government Project Design team that developed the Master Plan for Metro Manila's flyover, rail transit and expressways. In the United States, he pursued his career in transportation – working at the Fairfax County Department of Transportation and then serving as Transportation Director in the City of Fairfax. When he retired in 2013, his colleagues honored him by designating a "Verzosa Lane" within the Property Yard of the CUE bus.
In sports, he excelled in billiards, bowling and tennis, winning many trophies in tournaments. He enjoyed playing poker and mahjong.
Alex loved to cook and entertain friends and family. He was the perfect host, always laughing, cracking jokes, and simply enjoying the company of friends. He is proud of his signature pancit palabok, sardines, pasta a la vongole. Crab parties were always a hit.
He traveled with Caby and Alexandra and explored several countries. They were present at the Mass celebrated in Rome by the then new Pope Francis on New Year's Day. They traveled to Santiago de Compostela in 2001 and visited various cities in Spain. They spent Christmas in New Zealand. Whenever he could, he loved going home to the Philippines to connect to his roots and reunite with family and classmates. He valued his family 's century-old ancestral home – Villa Angela Heritage House in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur where he and Caby celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1999.
Alex treasured the special gift from his youngest sister, Emmeline- a kidney, which enabled him to live a healthy life for 20 years following his kidney transplant. With the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic, he started dialysis.
With frequent hospitalizations since the start of 2024, he searched for a way to thank all those who have cared for him through the years. He celebrated his 76 th birthday with his dialysis medical team, hosting a crab feast dubbed as a "Filipino Fiesta" in the garden. And on July 28, 2024, some 120 guests from around the world - friends, doctors, caregivers, tennis aficionados – joined Alex and Caby to celebrate their 50 th Wedding Anniversary in Virginia, USA.
Alex was able to thank everyone, in person, for the compassion, care, and love that everyone had so generously given him throughout his life on earth. His family and friends have continued their prayers for Eternal Rest in God's Presence.
A celebration of his vibrant life will be held on Monday, 28 October 2024 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 41685 Corpus Christi Dr, Aldie, Virginia 20105. The Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 AM, Eastern Standard Time. Interment of the urn will follow at the cemetery of St. John the Apostle Parish Church located at 101 Oakcrest Manor Drive, Leesburg, VA 20176.
