Obituary

Alfred Green Leonard, Sr. was known to many as a quiet man. But few knew the real man hidden inside. Alfred was one of 16 children born on April 7, 1913 to Humphrey and Levie (Dawson) Leonard in Prince William County, Virginia. Alfred was a courageous man who bravely served in the United States Army. He fought during World War II; having landed on Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion. He also fought battles in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. His bravery and courage earned him several honors including the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. After the war, he worked as an MP. When his service with the army was completed, Alfred came home to Virginia.

He and his wife, Margaret settled in Loudoun County, Virginia. They made a living working on dairy farms. No matter what the weather, Alfred knew there were cows to be fed and milked. It was hard work. But each day Alfred diligently completed the task. And once again showing a hidden side; one of strength, character and the determination to work hard.

Alfred and Margaret were blessed with four sons. He was very dedicated to his family. His sons reminisce about the times they and their dad went camping. Alfred eagerly watched wrestling on t v. He loved to take a daily walk, often walking several miles at a time. When his wife, Margaret, decided to be a daycare provider, Alfred was there helping to provide a safe and loving place for Leah, Michael and Billy. The children brought joy into his life as he watched the kids play and oftentimes joined in.

Sadly, Alfred passed away on January 29, 2010. He leaves behind his wife Margaret; sons Tony of Leesburg, VA, Phillip and wife Judy of Hamilton, VA, and Alfred Jr. and wife Patricia of Hamilton, VA; grandchildren Sandi Lake, Sean Leonard and Linda Leonard, great grandchildren Bobby, Julia, Tobi and Brendan along with a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son Calvin, 15 siblings, father Humphrey Leonard and mother Levie (Dawson) Leonard. Family and friends are invited to Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd. NE, Leesburg, VA 20175 on Sunday, January 31, 2010 between the hours of 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. A service will follow starting at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be February 1, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Middleburg Memorial Park Cemetery, Middleburg, VA.
