On Monday, September 14, 2009 Alfred Salvatore Torelli passed away at the age of 81. He died peacefully at his home in Ashburn, VA after a courageous fight with bone cancer.
He was the beloved son of the late Alfred and Anna Torelli. Al spent his youth in Brooklyn, NY and joined the Marine Corps at age 17. He then enjoyed his career with the Navy Dept. for 37 years as a budget analyst and logistics specialist.
He just celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary this past June. Al and Mary raised their children where they lived in the same home in Annandale for 48 years before moving in 2008 to their senior development in Ashburn, VA. They spent many happy years with family and friends; entertaining, enjoying their Annandale neighbors, their garden, yard, porch and patio. They traveled extensively, including numerous cruises and trips to Florida, California, New York, New England, Arizona, Colorado, England and of course Italy. Not to mention the requisite yearly gambling trips to Atlantic City and Vegas.
Besides his loving wife Mary, Al's favorite pastimes were his grandchildren, gambling and baseball. He played baseball or softball most of his life, including down on the Eclipse in DC early in his career, followed by senior softball in Fairfax County where he became the oldest member. He was still pitching as late as 2008. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he finally got to see his favorite team play at Fenway Park 3 years ago.
Al always had a joke or funny story to tell. Rough and tough on the outside, but sensitive, kind and genuinely concerned for you on the inside – a heart of gold. A caring father and grandfather, loving husband, and loyal friend to all.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Mary, his son Stephen (Denise) of Sterling, daughter Rita (Gerry) of Leesburg, and grandchildren Richard, Emily and Timothy. Also by many other friends and family members.
Viewing at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road, NE, Leesburg, VA on Saturday, September 19, 2009 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed immediately by a short service at the funeral home.
At the family's request, memorial donations may be sent in his honor to Capital Hospice, 209 Gibson St. NW, Suite 202, Leesburg, VA 20176.
