Obituary

A truly amazing lady, who touched the lives of others wherever she went. This was Alice Gillentine. On December 16, 2009 Alice Lee Gillentine passed away while a patient in INOVA Loudoun Hospital.

Alice was born on June 25, 1935 to John M. and Vergie Viola Saylor in Kentucky. She married James Donald Gillentine. As a Navy wife, she learned the love of travel; and was fortunate to see many places. Alice lived in the Bahamas for 3 years and travelled cross country. They were blessed with four wonderful daughters.

A natural person, Alice had a bubbly, outgoing personality. A real "people person," she never met a stranger. Alice made friends with whomever she came in contact with. She made an impact on the lives of many. Those whom she met always remembered her. In later years Alice settled into a job working in the office of a dermatologist. She found such enjoyment working with her fellow employees and in the patients who came into the office. An independent woman, she bought her own home.

As the family grew, so did her love. Alice proved to be a very devoted mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She sold her home and bought a condo just to be closer to her family. She would spend time sitting on the porch of her condo watching the people go by and waiting for visits from her family. Her greatest pastime was spending time with her family. Every Thursday evening was set aside to have a family dinner in her home. She loved vacationing with them. Their last vacation together was this past summer when they spent time at the beach. After moving into her condo, Alice met her neighbor, Louise, with whom she formed a close friendship. Louise became a part of the family. She and Louise spent much time sitting on her porch.

In her later years, Alice decided to leave a legacy behind for her children and grandchildren. For the last five years she has spent each day writing of childhood memories, telling of things she may never have thought of to say. Her request is that her four daughters would get together each year on June 25, the day of her birthday, to reminisce, that her memories would stay alive.

Keeping her memories alive are her children: Dee Mitchell of Harleysville, PA, Beverly Scholz of Ashburn, VA, Barbara Stiles of Lansdowne, VA and Donaliece Carey of Leesburg, VA; brother Don Saylor of Corbin, KY; sisters: Mary "Tommie" Hensley of Bellville, MI; Kathleen Payne of Corbin, KY and Marsha Rose of Ypsilanti, MI; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by James Donald Gillentine, sisters: Helen Lorene Elliott, Grace Jenine Saylor and Serida Ann Saylor.

Family and friends are invited to share her memories at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 on December 21, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A service will follow starting at 2:00 p.m.

At the family's request donations can be made to INOVA Loudoun Hospital, 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg, VA 20176 or Capitol Hospice, 209 Gibson Street NW, Suite 202, Leesburg, VA 20176.
