Angelina (Ranalli) "Angela" Lawlor, was born on March 28, 1914 and arrived in the United States from Vieste, Italy, where she became a naturalized citizen when she six years old. She was quarantined on the ship because she was sick. They arrived in Bristol Rhode Island and later moved to Philadelphia, PA and then back to Bristol, RI.
She graduated from Colt Memorial High School in Bristol in 1931, and placed first in her class and was a member of the Rhode Island Honor Society. Angelina attended Butler Hospital passing coursed in psychiatric nursing in 1934, graduated for The Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing in Fall River, MA in 1935, and received a post-graduate degree from Woman's Hospital in New York City in 1936. She was a Registered Nurse in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. She met her future husband Raymond F. Lawlor, Sr., while caring for him during a period of illness and hospitalization and it was "love at first sight"!
They married and in 1940 they welcomed the arrival of their first son Raymond F. Lawlor, Jr. In 1945 the celebrated the arrival of their second son James. Angela was an active member in the community and followed her Catholic faith. After several years, she returned to nursing and worked for a short period of time at the former Farren Memorial Hospital in Turners Falls, MA Angela and her husband Ray built a good life in Montague Center for themselves and their sons. She was devoted to and cared for Ray as long as she could, before Alzheimer's incapacitated him resulting in her having to place him in a nursing facility until his passing in January of 2007. She attended the Senior Center in Turners Falls and remained a devout communicant of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Turners Falls, MA.
She migrated to Virginia to avoid the New England winters; each year staying a little longer until she stayed all of last year in Leesburg, Virginia. She was an active participant at the Leesburg Senior Center, and was an inspiration to the younger members.
She was loved, admired and will be missed by her family and her many friends. She leaves her loving and devoted son James, and his wife Patty of Leesburg, VA, as well as her grandchildren who include: Alexandra Lawlor, Cullen Lawlor and Devon Lawlor, Kathleen Lawlor and Raymond L. Lawlor. Angela also leaves her loving nieces: Paula Boudreau and Barbara Alarie.
In keeping with Angelina's wishes, she will be cremated and a Memorial Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed at a future date and time to be announced at Our Lady of Peace Parish, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA in the spring of this year. Rites of committal and inurnment will follow in the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA. Visiting hours are omitted. Flowers are respectfully asked to be omitted and expressions of affection are preferred in the form of a charitable contribution in her memory, to the Greenfield Community College ADN School of Nursing Program, in c/o Nancy Staelens, Administrative Assistant, 1 College Drive, Greenfield, MA 01301.
