IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ann Abella
(Guttmann) Korb
January 1, 1945 – January 25, 2022
Ann Abella (Guttmann) Korb was born January 1, 1945, in Pensacola, FL, to Louis Brent Guttmann, Jr. and Alma Alina (Ollila) Guttmann. She was the first baby born in Pensacola in the new year, earning a spot in the local newspaper and establishing a lifelong pattern of enthusiastically jumping into new adventures.
Throughout her childhood, Ann was very close to her extended Guttmann family in Pensacola, especially her beloved grandmother Abella Agnes (Bowes) Guttmann. Her favorite childhood memories included playing with her two younger brothers in the pine forests, excursions to Pensacola Beach, and summer vacations on the Ollila family farm in Skandia, MI. Ann attended St. Michael's Grammar School, and was a graduate of Pensacola Catholic High School. She was an accomplished violinist and a member of the Pensacola Junior Symphony.
Ann graduated from Sacred Heart Nursing School in Pensacola in 1965 and earned her B.S in nursing from Salve Regina College in Newport, RI in 1980. During her nearly 50 years as a nurse, she worked in hospital and clinical settings in Albany, NY; New London, CT; Newport, RI; and Fairfax, VA. She settled in Reston, VA with her family in 1980, and began her more than 30-year nursing career with Kaiser Permanente in 1985.
Ann was an exceptionally devoted mother and grandmother, affectionately known as "Annie" to her eight grandchildren. She led with her heart and unfailingly brought humor, spontaneity, compassion, and fun wherever she went. Ann loved to spend time at the beach, including during annual family trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She had a wonderful network of friends--including classmates from high school and many fellow nurses--and stayed in touch with frequent phone calls that often lasted for hours.
Ann is survived by her partner of thirty years, Dennis Slazer of Ashburn, VA; daughters, Mary Kay (Scott) MacMillan of Ashburn, VA, Karen Schanke of Richmond, VA, and Julia "Julie" (Adam) List of Alpharetta, GA; son Lawrence "Larry" (Julie) Korb, Jr., of Arlington, VA; and grandchildren Jody Schanke, Thomas "Tommy" Schanke, Kurt List, Allison "Allie" MacMillan, Andrew MacMillan, Jane List, Grant Korb, and Charlotte Korb. She is also survived by her brothers Louis "Luke" (Paula) Guttmann of Palm Coast, Florida, and James "Jim" (Carmen) Guttmann of Pensacola.
