Obituary

Ann Crawford Newland died peacefully at Loudoun Hospital surrounded by her family on March 16, 2019. God's love and presence was palpable in the hour before she left this life, as her room became full of St. Gabriel's parishioners who encircled her bed, prayed and told "Ann stories."

Ann was born in Jefferson City, TN on April 20, 1938. She met Rev. William T. Newland, Jr. when she was 4 years old and he was 8. They married in 1958 and loved each other through thick and thin until "Father Bill" passed away in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, John Crawford Newland in 2017. She is survived by her loving sons Michael Preston Newland and his wife Sarah, and William Trent Newland, III and his wife Trace. She was the loving Grandmother of Rachel Ann Newland, Chase Bradley Newland, Riley Anne Newland, Parker John Newland, Taylor Elizabeth Newland, Ethan Trent Newland, Preston Joseph Newland and Lane Rachel Newland.

Ann was Miss Morristown, TN in 1957, attended the University of Tennessee, and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the Northern Virginia Community College in 1975. That year she began a 43 year career as a Marriage and Family Counselor. She and Father Bill began a ministry of offering their counseling services based out of offices in Episcopal Churches, including St. Alban's, Washington, D.C, Holy Comforter, Vienna, St. James, Leesburg, St. Timothy's, Herndon, and Ann was still seeing clients at St. Thomas, McLean at the time of her passing.

Ann was a devoted, passionate knitter and was a driving force behind the birth of the St. Gabriel's Prayer Shawl Ministry which lovingly creates knitted shawls for ill parishioners and hospital patients, and provides knitted blankets for all St. Gabriel's baptisms. Her fellow pray shawl knitters placed a shawl on her as they surrounded her with prayer on the night she left this life. She loved jewelry, colorful clothing, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, beach vacations, and dogs-including her beloved Abigail.

We will celebrate her life on Friday, March 22 with a viewing at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg from 6-8 pm, and on Saturday, March 23 at St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg with funeral services beginning at 11:30am. Please keep the Newland family in your prayers.
