Obituary

Anne Werntz Moffatt, 90, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully surrounded by her family on April 12, 2025, in Ashburn, Virginia.

Anne was born on August 21, 1934, in Wilmington, DE the daughter of James Herbert Werntz and Florence Hoffman Werntz.  Anne and her brother Jim grew up in Wilmington, DE.  She graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1952 and attended Oberlin College in Ohio and then Millersville State Teachers College (now Millersville University) in Lancaster, PA, earning a teaching degree in 1956.  She fulfilled a professional dream by becoming an elementary school teacher in Malvern, PA.  She was excellent at teaching and connecting with her class, so much so that one of her students tracked her down and visited her just two years ago to tell her how the course of her life had been positively impacted by Anne's encouragement over sixty years earlier.

In September of 1959, Anne married a young US Army Captain, Edwin Gordon Moffatt, at Grace Methodist Church in Wilmington, Delaware.  He was the love of her life, and she poured her heart into their life together for 60 years until his passing in 2019.  She supported his Army career, moving across the country and to Europe as he advanced, and raised their three sons, sometimes alone, when he went to war.   When he retired in 1974, they settled in Fairfax, VA and she continued to invest in her boys, sacrificing so that they could have every opportunity.  She worked a little at a local retail shop but always set her hours so she could be home to meet them after school.

Anne loved the Lord, her family and her country.  She was an active member of Fairfax United Methodist Church for over 50 years.  She also enjoyed quilting, traveling, family beach trips (really the beach with anyone) and dining out and playing Bridge with friends.  She is survived by her three sons Mark (Sang Im), Gregg (Sonja) and Brad (Kelly) and nine grandchildren (Jessica, Bryan, Justin (Emily), Jordan, Jack (Bria), Joshua, Amelia, Ford and Adele).

A celebration of life will be held at Farmwell Hall at the Ashby Ponds Senior Living Community, 21170 Ashby Ponds Blvd, Ashburn, VA 20147 on 28 April 2025 at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Fairfax United Methodist Church or Fisher House Foundation.  Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
