Obituary

Professor, philosopher, poet, artist, mathematician, author, and father, Anthony Vincent Fiacco passed away on Wednesday, December 11th 2013 at the age of 85. Born in Johnstown New York to Italian immigrants Umberto and Valentina Fiacco, Anthony was a first generation Italian-American who was very proud of his heritage. He was raised in Johnstown, NY with his beloved sister Clara. He attended Union College where he received a Fulbright scholarship to the University of Pisa. He served as a naval officer during the Korean War, and later earned his Phd in Mathematics from Northwestern University. He was a Professor of Operations Research and Applied Sciences at George Washington University for 24 years until his retirement in 1995. He authored countless papers and two books in his field, one in collaboration with Professor Garth McCormick, which won the prestigious Lanchester Prize. In addition to his passion for his profession, he was a spiritual and religious man who approached his personal life with similar enthusiasm embracing all of its adventures. Tony, as he was known, was a Renaissance man who had a profound appreciation for music, poetry, art, and nature. In retirement, he found a renewed joy in the simpler things in life: playing pool with his son, having lunch with his daughter and making Play-Doh cookies with his granddaughter. He took comfort in the belief that upon his death he would be reunited with his loved ones in the presence of God. Those who loved him recognized what an exceptional man he was and will miss him dearly. He is survived by his children Patricia, Alicia and Anthony, Jr. and his granddaughters Brooke and Carolina.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Sterling, VA at 10:00am. He will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery Johnstown, New York in April 2014.
