August Herman Wessels, Jr. (Gus), 92, of Leesburg, Virginia passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Gus was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 1, 1930 to Ruth Hamilton Wessels and Reverend August Herman Wessels, Sr. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Philosophy. In 1960, he began a career that spanned six decades with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland in Procurement and Project Management. For part of that time, he worked as a private contractor to NASA, under the name Windway Atmospheric Research Project Management. Gus also proudly served as a Deacon at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington DC.

On February 16, 1952, he married the love of his life, Patricia Anne Turnbaugh. They were married for 60 years and had six children, Elizabeth, James, Patricia, David, Susan and Laura.  He had fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. August is predeceased by his wife, Patricia, his parents, August and Ruth, his brother, William and his grandson, Jonathan.  Gus was a devoted father and grandfather, sharing his thirst for knowledge and love of books.  The support, guidance and encouragement he offered to each of his children and grandchildren  was invaluable. He will be remembered for his love of long rides in the country while listening to  music, spending time at his second home in Lake Anna, and vacationing with his family at the beach. Gus especially loved sharing memories of his childhood and life with Pat.

Viewing on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg between 6-8pm.  Funeral Services on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, 9:30 am at The Presbyterian Church 4101 Nebraska Avenue NW Washington DC 20016. Light reception following service in Stone
Hall.  Interment at Union Cemetery 323 N King Street Leesburg, Virginia 20176 2:00 pm
Family and friends may gather at the River Creek Country Club 43800 Olympic Boulevard Leesburg, Virginia 20176 3:00-5:00pm
