IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara Ann
Marvel
November 7, 1941 – May 6, 2020
Barbara Marvel, of Ashburn, Virginia, peacefully passed away while in the care of Innova Loudoun Hospital on May 6, 2020 with her daughters at her side. She was 78 years old. She fought issues from heart disease for the last 20 years but was a true survivor in many ways fighting against all odds, the many complications that she endured.
Barbara was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the daughter of the late John R. Kelly of Baltimore and the late Holly M. Taslitt of Greencastle, Pennsylvania. She was an only child raised by her mother and grandmother, Anna Marcinkus-Alakna of Alexandria, Virginia. She attended George Washington High School. After high school she travelled to St. Petersburg, Florida to visit her mother where she met her late husband, Neil Marvel, of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, who ironically was also visiting his mother in St. Petersburg. Mutual friends set them up for a blind date on New Years Eve. They were married within 6 months, and their first daughter was born a year later. They moved to back to Alexandria, Virginia in 1964 where they worked and raised their 3 children. Barbara volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for many years while her daughters were involved in scouting. In 1975 they moved to Greencastle, Pennsylvania where their children attended school. In 1983 they transferred to Hershey, Pennsylvania for her late husband's job in Lancaster. Barbara worked at the Hershey Lodge and later with her husband in the printing company that he managed for 10 years. Upon her late husband's death in 1993, she made her final move back to Virginia to live closer to her children and grandchildren.
Barbara enjoyed gardening, cooking, decorating, reading, music, and most of all, raising her children. Barbara enjoyed family vacations, family gatherings and decorating for the holidays. She worked for many years at CVS Pharmacy while she resided in Ashburn. She also enjoyed the many friendships that were made where she lived at the Wingler House in Ashburn. She is survived by her three children, Leslie M. Sidhu, of Ashburn, Virginia and husband, Raj; Cary M. Marvel of Lyman, South Carolina and wife, Amy; Natalie A. King of Gainesville, Virginia. She also has 5 grandchildren: Devin Sidhu, Derek Sidhu, Taylor Brown, Michael Brown, and Kortney Marvel.
Cremation services will be private. A private memorial service will be held at her late husband's headstone in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. A Celebration of Life will be held for her family and friends at a later date, TBD, in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the ASPCA ( https://www.aspca.org/ways-to-give ) in remembrance of Barbara and her many fur babies that she adopted and raised over the years.
