IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bartholomew John
Walsh Jr.
January 27, 1938 – May 30, 2022
Bartholomew John Walsh, Jr. passed away peacefully on May 30, 2022. He was born on January 27th, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to Bartholomew John Walsh and Verna Mae (Quackenbush) Walsh.
B.J. graduated from Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, New Jersey, class of 1957. After graduation he enlisted in the Merchant Marine where he spent some time sailing the world before attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point) and graduating in 1964 as a Mechanical Engineer. Receiving a commission in the United States Naval Reserve he served proudly as an Engineering Duty Officer retiring as a Captain after 35 years of service.
His civilian career also found him serving our nation as he worked as an engineer for the Naval Sea Systems Command. B.J.'s primary focus was on making our nation's warships safer by designing and overseeing shipboard firefighting and flooding control systems. His expertise was put to good use later in his tenure as he helped set engineering standards throughout the navy by working for the Navy's Inspector Generals Office as they certified programs fleet wide.
B.J. was extremely proud of his children, country and military service. The legacy of naval service began with his father and uncle in World War II, continued with both his and his brother's service in the reserves and on active duty. The next generation continued with his son and son in law who were both Naval Officers and his daughters who worked as engineers on Navy projects as well. B.J. also worked to pass on that legacy by mentoring young engineers through various professional organizations and his support of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association.
B.J. is survived by his children Bill (Leslie) Walsh, Rita (Bob) Scanlon and Juliana (Ben) Stroup as well as seven grandchildren, two brothers and his sister.
A small private memorial will be held to commend him to the sea.
