Betty J. Welty passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017. Betty was 77 years old. She made her home in Centreville, Virginia.

Born on April 22, 1939 in White Hall, Virginia, she was the loving daughter of Howard and Zola (Shanholtz) Poland. Betty was blessed with a daughter, Mary C. Prenn (known by mom as Slow Poke) and a son, Gregory Welty; along with three grandchildren, Robert Prenn (also known as Bobby or Speedy), Christine Welty and Scott Welty; who survive her.  Also left behind is her loyal companion and loving canine friend, Missy.  Missy would be her protector; always by mom's side.

Betty was previously employed as a Data Entry Supervisor of the Records Room for the Fairfax County Police Department for 27 years; but, employed with Fairfax County for 33 years.

When the children were younger, the family could be found sitting around the table enjoying board games. Betty loved cooking and shared her cooking skills with her daughter, Mary. As she became older, she enjoyed playing bingo. When her grandson, Bobby, would come to see her she would give him that special look. Bobby knew what that meant – 'I want my head rubbed'. While he rubbed her head, they would always sing their favorite song…. You Are My Sunshine. Once Betty had the excitement of going on a cruise to the Bahamas. She was timid at first, thinking she would be going out into the deep sea in a small boat. Once on the boat, she fell in love with it. Betty held her hand over the side and a dolphin actually kissed her hand.  Mom loved going to marching band competitions and concerts.

Mary, Bobby and Mom travelled to Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the beaches of North Carolina.

Although she is gone from our sight, Betty will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of the ones she leaves behind.

Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, Virginia. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 am on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Colonial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Rosedale Cemetery, 917 Cemetery Road, Martinsburg, WV 25404.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the following: the Insight Program for the special loving care of mom.  They were so loving and patient.  Mom always laughed when they were with her.  To the Home Care Assistance caregivers Elsa, Natasha, and Erika. To Hospice Care; a special thank you to Wendi the CNA who helped with the caring of mom three times a week and Ellie the nurse.

Mom/Grandma, you will always be in our hearts.
