Obituary

Brenda Theresa Dunbar, affectionately known as Bunny, departed this world on November 26, 2020, at Inova Hospital in Lansdowne, Virginia.

Brenda was born December 3, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Dorothy and Robert Dunbar. Brenda leaves behind her beloved husband of 41 years, Conrad M. Govine, Jr.; her son Louis Frederick; her granddaughter Nacala Frederick; her brothers Robert Dunbar of Tampa, Florida; Philip Dunbar of Great Falls, Montana; and Terence Dunbar of New Jersey.

Brenda attended Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn. Following high school, Brenda was employed by Yankelovich, Skelly & White (a national market research firm) as an Administrative Assistant. She was quickly promoted to Personnel Director. During Brenda's employment, the firm funded her undergraduate and master's degree studies at Pace University in New York City. She received honors for her master's thesis, "Effects of the Equal Employment Opportunity Acts of 1964 and 1972 on Women in Middle Management." Brenda was the first person in her family to earn a college degree. Brenda was later appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of Pace University Alumni Association, subsequently becoming the Association's first Black woman president.

After seven years with Yankelovich, Skelly & White, Brenda left to start her own consulting firm – Brenda Dunbar & Associates – designing and administering programs to help managers with affirmative action and corporate communications programs. Four years later, Brenda was offered a staff management position with AT&T as it was moving from phone company to full data/voice communication network. After two years, Brenda returned to her own consulting firm. Active in the prosecution of employment disputes, Brenda developed an interest in pursuing a legal career. Virginia's Washington & Lee University offered a full scholarship. Brenda chose to enroll in the University of Virginia's Law School. Due to health issues, she was unable to complete her studies.

Brenda endured numerous health issues including asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and fibromyalgia. She successfully fought cancer. Knee and back surgeries followed. In all of the pain and discomfort, Brenda found a determination to manage her health issues and maintain a positive attitude. She offered the same positive determination and support to her family and friends. Tough and determined, she did not go gentle into that good night.

On June 13, 2021, Brenda's ashes were spread over the Hudson River in New York. Brenda will never be forgotten by those of us who love her.
