Obituary

Caroline Alea Belcher, age 14, passed away peacefully at home in Ashburn, Virginia on April 11, 2023 surrounded by an endless amount of love from family and friends.

Caroline was born on February 6, 2009 in Fairfax, VA. She was a dream come true for her mom and dad, who had already been blessed with Caroline's older brother, Blake. A few years later Caroline's younger brother, Benjamin, would truly complete their family.

Caroline adored her brothers in every way, and was known to show them love in a variety of ways, including acting as their second mom.

From the moment Caroline was born she was full of life, love and laughter. Even in her very early years, her laugh, smile, and energy were contagious. She loved easily and was an incredibly empathetic and caring soul. She was her mom's constant companion in the kitchen and the first person to help her dad with any project around the house. She loved her family and friends with a fierce, genuine, and open heart and showed sincere compassion for others who were going through difficult times. She formed significant bonds with her teachers, many of whom were her most cherished relationships.

Caroline was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 3 years old. She completed treatment and was then stable for five years, during which time she flourished and truly enjoyed being a kid again. In March 2020, Caroline relapsed and continued to be in some form of treatment until she passed away. While she endured a lot over the last ten years, Caroline continued to share her beautiful smile and positive attitude with everyone she knew.

Caroline was a daughter, sister, and granddaughter. She was a student, a teenager, and a best friend. She loved cooking, playing the piano, and doing all kinds of arts and crafts. She was also a childhood cancer advocate, public speaker, and an inspiration to anyone who was lucky enough to meet her. Her laugh and light will be remembered forever.

In addition to her parents, Brian and Emily, Caroline is survived by her beloved brothers, Blake and Benjamin; grandmother, Bonnie Belcher of Horseheads, NY; grandparents, Wayne and Elizabeth Chodkowski of Ashburn, VA; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins, to include: Bruce and Leslie Belcher and children Avery, Logan, and Adele; Brett and Jarka Belcher and children Klarka, Vasek, and Amelie; and John McHugh and son Patrick. Caroline's grandfather, Clifford Belcher, was waiting for her in heaven.

It is impossible to fully express our gratitude to the many, many people who have supported our family throughout the last ten years of Caroline's treatment. Your love carried us through so many difficult times, and you continue to hold us up now.

We are so thankful for Rally Foundation who has loved our girl since the beginning of this journey. With Rally, Caroline found her voice and was able to share her story and form some of the most important relationships in her life. Rally's mission to fund childhood cancer research also made sure that a clinical trial was waiting for Caroline when we needed it most.

We are forever grateful to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for the incredible care they provided to Caroline over the past ten years. We would like to specifically express our love and gratitude to her oncologist, Dr. Trent Hummel, who always made Caroline feel heard and loved, and gave us so many years together.

A funeral service will be held at Arcola United Methodist Church, 24757 Arcola Mills Dr, Dulles, VA 20166 on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 12:00 pm.

Please feel free to join the family for a reception at Clyde's Willow Creek Farm, 42920 Broadlands Blvd, Broadlands, VA 20148, on the Richmond Terrace between 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
