IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carolyn Louise
Tillotson Smith
December 11, 1942 – December 11, 2023
Carolyn Louise Tillotson Smith went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, December 11, 2023.
Carolyn was born to John C. and Maxine M. Tillotson on December 11, 1942, in Norton, Kansas. Carolyn spent her early and formative years in Norton. Upon her high school graduation, Carolyn attended and graduated from Washburn University in Topeka.
With family and political connections in Kansas, Carolyn found her way to the Washington, DC area, serving in multiple capacities in the federal government, advising on political campaigns and lobbying on behalf of client interests. Though she spent some time in New York and New Mexico, her life was centered in the political world of Washington, DC.
Through connections in the Washington, DC area, Carolyn met Norman Longfellow Smith, whom she later married. They resided in Middleburg, Virginia and together purchased one of the oldest log homes in Virginia, dating to 1732. The structure, originally located in the Tyson's Corner area, was physically relocated to an 11-acre parcel in Middleburg. Named "Fairfax Found," Carolyn and Norman spent many years enjoying the property until his passing in 2008. Carolyn continued to reside at the property, later operating a bed and breakfast until 2015. She was involved in the Trinity Episcopal Church community for many years, singing in their Chancel Choir and participating in their Flower Guild. She loved creating flower arrangements and showcasing them for others.
Carolyn loved to travel, especially spending time in foreign countries, gaining fresh and new experiences and to see the world around her. On many occasions in her life, she simply wanted to "head out for a ride" in her car, returning hours later but enjoying the time spent with family and friends.
Carolyn relocated to the Haymarket, VA area in late 2015, and resided there until 2020 when she moved to a Loudoun County assisted living facility, spending her final years under Hospice Care. She was extremely grateful to her private caregivers, most notably Olimpia and Rebecca, for their unwavering devotion to her until the very end.
Ever the fighter, Carolyn was determined to live on, and exhibited her strength, will and determination in her final days. She peacefully passed away on her 81st birthday. Those who know Carolyn are not surprised, as she would simply "want it that way."
Carolyn was preceded in life by her husband Norman L. Smith, her parents, John C., and Maxine M. Tillotson, and her brother John Tillotson. She is survived by her nephew Charles Tillotson, his wife Melissa, and their sons, Cole and Clayton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Capital Caring Hospice (www.capitalcaring.org). Their support and care for Carolyn will be forever remembered.
