IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Arthur
Kreager
September 5, 1951 – February 27, 2022
David Arthur Kreager, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Feb 27, 2022 in Leesburg, Virginia. "Dave" as he was known to his loved ones, was 70 years old. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Dave was born on September 5, 1951 to his parents Arthur William Kreager and Margaret Collins Kreager in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dave spent his childhood years living in both Minnesota and Ohio. Some of his most treasured early memories though included time spent on his family's farm in Marshall, Virginia. An exceptional student and eagle scout, Dave graduated with honors from Valley Forge High School. He went on to attend Kenyon College before earning both a bachelor's degree in political science and master's degree in public affairs from the University of Minnesota. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and graduated magna cum laude.
It was during his time in Minneapolis that he met and married his loving wife of 40 years, Alison. In a nod to his wit, Dave proposed to Alison on April fool's day 1981. The two were married in a beautiful lakeside ceremony at Lake Superior where they celebrated with family and friends late into the evening. Shortly thereafter, they started their family that would include their two children and eventually three grandchildren. Above all else, Dave was a loyal husband, proud father and grandfather, and devoted family man. In his later years, his greatest joy was spending time with Alison and their young grandchildren, making silly faces and reading them bedtime stories.
An avid outdoorsman, Dave was happiest while spending time in nature. He was an adventurer who enjoyed canoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, and most of all fishing. He could often be found standing on the beach, fishing pole in hand, watching the sunset. Highly motivated and athletic, Dave was a varsity football player, completed six marathons, and finished the American Birkebeiner, the longest cross country ski race in America. He gifted his love of sports to his children and spent many a weekend coaching or cheering for them from a sideline.
Dave was also an accomplished professional and executive. He was a natural leader who excelled as a sales and operational executive. He was an expert in the insurance industry and a strategic leader for a number of companies including UnitedHealth and the Kaiser Foundation, and Principal Financial Group. It is no surprise that with Dave's combination of intellect and work ethic he was awarded numerous promotions and awards during his career.
A lifelong learner, Dave was a passionate historian, particularly of early American history. He was a voracious reader of civil and revolutionary war literature. In his later years he devoted time to volunteering at Loudon Museum and was on the Board of the Friends of Ball's Bluff. One of his favorite pastimes was walking the battlefields of Northern Virginia and taking in the rich history of this region. Dave was also known to be a great storyteller and often chronicled the little-known details of our country's history at family dinners. He is a descendant of the First Families of Virginia and was honored to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Dave is survived by his wife Alison, daughter Katharine, son Robert, and grandchildren Alexandra, Zachary, and Peer.
Services will be held in Leesburg on April 2nd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association, in Dave's name.
