David Winston Yoakum
Aug. 23, 1985 - Sept. 1, 2024
David Winston Yoakum died peacefully on Sept. 1, 2024, after a courageous battle with stage four colon cancer, which he faced with grace and strength since his diagnosis on Nov. 6, 2021. Born on Aug. 23, 1985, in Phoenix, Arizona, David was the beloved son of Frank Yoakum and Norie Rose Yoakum.
David is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Gina Yoakum, their cherished son, Lucas, and his parents and in laws John and Karen Ferrara. On his father's side, he leaves behind his brother, John Yoakum (Shannon), sisters Jenelle Gordon (Willie), Jennifer Clarke (David), and Stephanie Hale (Jesse). All of them, with his brother in-law Nicholas Ferrara (Regan), and sister in-law Angela Ferrara on Gina's side, remember him as a dedicated and helpful brother. David is also fondly remembered as a devoted nephew, cousin, and uncle by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
For 12 faithful years, David served as a talented web developer for the Public Affairs office at the National Guard Bureau headquarters. No matter the project or task, David always invested the time and effort to ensure his work was the very best it could be. His dedication to his job and his colleagues until the end was a testament to his character, commitment, and work ethic.
David was known for his sharp wit, deep love of family, and unwavering integrity. Outside of his professional life, he was an avid woodworker who loved creating pieces that brought his family and friends joy. David's craftsmanship was a reflection of his meticulous nature, attention to detail and appreciation for life's finer intricacies. His ability to see the big picture and zero in on fine details also came in handy with another one of his passions: photography. He not only loved these hobbies themselves, but he also valued the opportunity to learn about and compare the best tools for each of his interests. David's family and friends never purchased electronics or tools without first checking with him.
David's greatest pride and joy in life was his beloved son, Lucas, who was the light of his world and his constant source of motivation. He found immense happiness in Lucas' laughter, often being the one to spark it, and adored every moment they shared together. David was deeply committed to instilling in Lucas his values, strong moral code, and sense of self-responsibility. Through his love for Lucas and Gina, David exemplified his passion for family and community, always striving to create a nurturing and joyful environment for those he cared about.
Those who knew David will never forget his kindness, humor, and the joy he brought to those around him.
In lieu of flowers, David requested donations be made to the organizations that supported him throughout his remaining years with colon cancer: Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital, Capital Caring, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
