Obituary
Donald Peter Brown, 83, of Ashburn, Virginia, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Born May 18, 1930 in North Braddock, PA, he was the eldest son of Margaret Newcombe Nickel. Donald was a graduate of Scott High School, in North Braddock, PA.
Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952. He then enjoyed a rich and rewarding career of over 30 years with the U.S. Foreign Service, spending much of that time living overseas, working at American embassies in Germany, Columbia, Cyprus, Greece, England, Japan & The Philippines.
Donald treasured his family and friends. In his earlier days, he was an accomplished athlete, avid jitterbug dancer, and bowler. Throughout his life, he also enjoyed traveling with his family, absorbing foreign culture and exploring foreign cuisines.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Hazel (Onderko) Brown, of Ashburn, VA; his son, Michael Brown of Washington D.C.; his son Donald Brown, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Catherine Sterling Brown, his daughter, Sharon Brown Zeller, his son-in-law, James Zeller all of Ashburn, VA; his daughter-in-law, Catherine Newman Brown, of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Charles Brown. He is also survived by three brothers: Joseph (and Alice) Brown & Charles Nickel, both of Tucson, AZ, and David (and Janice) Brown, of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces and nephews in Arizona and in Pennsylvania.
Family and friends are warmly welcomed to call at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd., NE, Leesburg, VA, on Monday, December 23 from 2PM to 4PM, and 6PM to 8PM. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 24 at 10AM at Colonial Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's name to Johns Hopkins Medicine (P.O. Box 17073 Baltimore, MD 21297-0509) or Loudoun Hospital Center (INOVA Health Foundation, 8110 Gatehouse Rd, Ste. 200E, Falls Church, VA 22042).
