Dorothy Marie Brand
October 5, 1932 – January 27, 2024
Dorothy Marie Brand passed away peacefully at Loudoun Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Leesburg, Virginia, on January 27, 2024. She was 91 years old and leaves behind two nieces, Linda Edmonston (Tom) of Moneta, VA, and Diane Markart-Reddy (David) of Chantilly, VA. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her sister, Helen.
Dorothy was born October 5, 1932, to Caroline Marie (Kaerger) Brand and Otto Brand. Her family lived in Laurelton, New York where Dorothy attended school at PS 38 and PS 156. At the age of eight and a half years old, her father passed away. Dorothy became quite independent at an early age since her mother and sister had to work to pay the bills.
Dorothy lived with her mother in Laurelton until 1966, and later moved to Williston Park, New York. In 1969, they moved to Virginia where Helen, her husband and Dorothy's nieces lived. She worked for Melpar Inc., in Falls Church, for most of her career in Virginia, and retired in 2008.
After her mother passed away at 98 years old, Dorothy moved into a senior citizen's apartment in Centreville, Virginia. Tragically, the entire apartment building burned down in early 2018. Dorothy lost most everything she owned; but, luckily, she and all the residents in the building were able to escape safely with the help of the Centreville fire department. Later that year, Dorothy moved to Harmony of Chantilly, an Assisted Living facility in Herndon, Virginia.
Dorothy owned two dogs and a cat over her lifetime. She was very smart and knew most all the answers to the questions on one of her favorite TV shows, Jeopardy. She enjoyed eating authentic New York delicatessen food, playing trivia games and bingo. She often won at the games she played and was awarded exciting prizes like hand towels, Kleenex and toilet paper.(remember, paper goods were scarce during the COVID 2020 pandemic) Dorothy attended Bible study, worked on crafts and also enjoyed listening to Elvis, the Rat Pack and most "oldies but goodies" type of music.
Dorothy became a resident of Loudoun Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (LRNC) at the age of 89. She celebrated her 90th and 91st birthdays while living there, and enjoyed visits with her nieces, their spouses and friends. She was especially fond of her suitemate, Marianne. Dorothy lived one year and seven months at LRNC, before the good lord called her home.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In leu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory can be sent to North Shore Animal League or Blue Ridge Hospice
