Douglas Zischke, 83, died peacefully at his home in Leesburg, Virginia. He was born in South Dakota in May, 1929 to Arthur and Alice Zischke. In June, 1957 he married Janice Kuehnemann. They were blessed with three children, Mark of Annandale, Deborah of Leesburg, Todd of Bumpass, and ten grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Dr. James Zischke of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mr. Zischke studied at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, earning a Bachelor's degree in journalism in 1951 and a Master's degree in 1952. During the Korean War, he served as a Sports Editor for the Signal Corps Training Center at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Returning to Madison, Wisconsin he worked as a technical editor for the US Forest Service.
He joined the US Foreign Service in 1957 serving with the United States Information Service as Assistant Information Office at the embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay and La Paz, Bolivia. Returning to Washington DC he worked as an information specialist. In Honduras, Argentina, and Guatemala he worked as Public Affairs Officer.
He was assigned to the US Army War College in Pennsylvania for a year before leaving for Iran where he served as a Public Affairs Officer up to the time of the Iranian Revolution. He worked as cultural coordinator for USICA in Washington DC. Retiring from the Foreign Service, he continued to work as an international consultant and foreign affairs advisor to the State Department. He was a member of the Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired, enjoyed tennis with the Golden Rackets, and was actively involved in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Crown Ministries, and foreign missions.

In his honor, a memorial service will take place on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland.
