Obituary

Edward James Marinich, born September 6, 1938, in Canton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in Leesburg, Virginia.

Eddy, as he was known in his youth, spent his early years on his bike roaming his quiet Midwest neighborhood visiting family, friends, getting to school, and ball games. He was always known for having a kind and generous soul.

Ed attended St. Ambrose College and Drake University where he earned his master’s degree. During these college years, he was introduced to Jane O’Meara, and at the age of 20, they married on the 4th of July, 1959, a marriage that would blossom for over 60 years. In 1961, he started working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a career that would take he and Jane to Virginia in 1969. There they raised their family, and Ed would continue his career with the USDA Dairy Division for a total of 39 years, retiring in 2000. Ed always had fond memories of his daily commute into D.C. with his “carpool buddies”.

After retiring, Ed and Jane enjoyed traveling together across the US and abroad, and spending time with their kids and grandkids. Ed was a devout Catholic and volunteered his time with organizations such as the Lion’s Club and Knights of Columbus, for many, many years.

Ed is predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jane (O’Meara) Marinich. He is survived by their two children, Stephen (Angela) and Melissa (Philip), and their six grandchildren, Madison, Zachary, Nathan, Olivia, Madeline, and Charlotte. He is also survived by his only brother Michael, and sister-in-law Kathryn.

Ed will be remembered for his dedication and love for his family, his drive for good work, his commitment to the community and impulse to always help when someone was in need. And of course, his epic laugh!

The funeral for Ed will be held at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church on Friday, March 27 at 11:00am, followed by his inurnment at Union Cemetery.
