Obituary

Edward L. Nalle (Ned) passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011, three weeks after
his 84th birthday. His health failed due to complications after hip replacement surgery,
which he underwent at great risk in order to avoid being confined to a wheelchair.
Ned was born on April 14, 1927, in Leesburg, Va. He moved near
Charlottesville, Va., after selling his Leesburg area farm in 2003. He passed away
at Charlottesville's Martha Jefferson Hospital. In the shadow of that hospital lie
the graves of his grandfather and his great-grandfather.
Ned is survived by his wife, Sharon Nalle; his daughter, Sharon Nalle Bedford;
his three sons, Edward, Donald and Robert Nalle; eight grandchildren, Cara
Wilcox, Jacque Spruill, Lena Nalle, Spencer Nalle, Mason Nalle, Benjamin Nalle,
Elijah Nalle and Aaron Nalle; six great-grandchildren; a beloved brother-in-law,
Don Fry; and numerous dear friends.
Ned was a faithful family man who admired honest, hard work. He never forgot
his early years on his father's farm, where he learned to respect the tireless labor
of honorable men and women who earned their living from the land. For the rest
of his life he loved farming, tractors, steam engines and ingenious farm
machinery.
As a truck driver and a farmer, Ned worked hours beyond count for most of his
life. He often chuckled at the notion of the 40-hour work week, remarking that
trucking bosses had their drivers to 40 hours by Tuesday. For decades, Ned's
schedule involved rising at 1-2 AM, working until noon or later, then farming into
the afternoons and evenings. Over the years, Ned collected milk from local farms,
contracted deliveries for Southern States, hauled oil for the Community Oil Co.,
and hauled fuel for Dayton Transport and Hahn Transportation. Through hard
work and dedication, Ned turned average jobs into an exceptional life for his wife
and four children.
Ned believed in God, church, marriage, family, friends and freedom. March 4,
2011 marked his 60th year of marriage to his beloved wife Sharon. Ned often said
that marrying Sharon was the best decision he ever made. Their long, loving
marriage was a model to everyone it touched.
Ned's family is grateful to God for the good gift of his life, and trusts God to
protect him until they see him again at the resurrection.
