Elaine Won Hemstreet (Leesburg, VA) October 7, 1927 - August 6, 2020
Passed away peacefully in her home. Elaine is survived by her husband of 53 years David and her sons Tim (Pam) of Leesburg, VA and Marc (Heather) of Richmond, VA and by her 4 grandsons Aidan, Nicholas, Parker and Daniel. She is also survived by her brother Bill (Margaret) of Honolulu, HI and her sister Blanche of Sacramento, CA as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Elaine was born in Honolulu as the fourth youngest of twelve children. She and her siblings witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor from the roof of their home. Elaine graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Hawaii where she majored in Education. Elaine bravely left island life to pursue her Masters Degree at Columbia University in New York. Once graduated, she returned to Hawaii to teach.
One fortunate day in 1965, she met the love of her life David on a visit he took to Hawaii with her cousin Dennis. They had a courtship through letters and were married two years later on August 3, 1967.
Elaine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend and teacher. As someone who was always active and social even in her retirement she kept busy volunteering at local schools and as a docent at many museums.
Services and interment will be held privately. Those wishing to honor Elaine's memory are asked in lieu of flowers to donate to the American Cancer Society or charity of their choice.
