IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elaine Pappas
Marshall
January 19, 1956 – April 6, 2023
Elaine Pappas Marshall, 67, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully into the arms of God on April 6, 2023. Although the last year of her life brought a challenging cancer diagnosis, Elaine's selfless spirit, humor, and God's grace were evident. Born in the Bronx, New York on January 19, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Louis Pappas and Georgia Pappas and sister to the late Kathy Jatras. She spent a happy 10 years of her childhood in Greece, attending American Community School, and later attended Springfield College in Springfield, MA where she earned a degree in Physical Education.
Elaine met the love of her life, Chip Marshall, while attending graduate school at George Washington University in 1981. After a whirlwind three-week courtship, Chip proposed and Elaine accepted despite Chip's lack of foresight to purchase a ring ahead of the proposal. They were married on September 5, 1981, and settled in Leesburg, VA.
Elaine was a proud mother of four sons: Chuck, Tim, Paul, and Andy. Elaine loved being a homemaker and was active in her sons' educational and athletic pursuits. An avid tennis player, Elaine taught her sons to play tennis and instilled a love of family and faith into their upbringing. Elaine also loved her role in her large extended family and organized annual reunion trips for her growing family. Later in life, Elaine adored her role as Yaya to seven grandchildren: Mason, Gideon, Gunner, Gage, Georgia, Elaina, and Logan. She particularly enjoyed taking her grands (as she called them) to playgrounds, the pickleball court, and out for ice cream dates.
Elaine was the director of Birthright of Loudoun County from 2014 - 2023. Elaine carried a deep passion for the unborn and carried out this passion through Birthright's mission. She immensely enjoyed her work and made many lasting friendships. Elaine also earned a master's degree in Human Services Counseling: Crisis Response and Trauma in May 2019 through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.
Elaine's life was characterized by her faithful walk with God. She demonstrated unwavering faith, even during adversity, and had a true passion to serve others. She was a faithful member of Saint Francis de Sales Church. Her greatest joys were spending time with her beloved family, hosting large family gatherings, defeating her husband and sons in spirited sports matches/games, and serving her local community. Elaine was also an ardent dog lover, raising several dachshund families during her life. Later in life, Elaine worked with MK9 Service Dogs where she trained and fostered service dogs for disabled veterans.
Elaine is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, Chip; son, Chuck (Rachel) of Cameron, NC; son, Tim (Emily) of Harpers Ferry, WV; son, Paul (Jennifer) of Bel Air, MD; son, Andy (Elizabeth) of Chesterfield, VA; and her seven grandchildren: Mason, Gideon, Gunner, Gage, Georgia, Elaina, and Logan. She also leaves behind two nieces (Alexandra and Christina), numerous close friends, and a loving extended family. Elaine was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Pappas; father, Louis Pappas; and sister, Kathy Jatras. Elaine's legacy is one of faith, optimism, and kindness. She will be warmly remembered and sorely missed.
