Betty Jane Schelhorn Martin, 84, passed away December 30, 2008.
Born Elizabeth Jane Norris on March 8, 1924, to William W. Norris and Margaret E. James Norris, Mrs. Martin grew up in Leesburg and Alexandria, VA and spent many happy times in Waterford, VA, as well. She graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia where she met her first husband, now deceased, George A. Schelhorn II. During WWII she contributed to the war effort by working at the torpedo factory in Alexandria. Her long legal secretarial career included time at the Pentagon and at the distinguished law firms of Steptoe and Johnson and Arnold and Porter in Washington, DC. While raising her four children in Leesburg she was self employed as a court reporter and was legal secretary to George M. Martin with a law firm in Leesburg. She was an avid reader, enjoyed painting and sewing, and was an active member of the Loudoun Playmakers in the 1960's. Mr. Schelhorn passed away in 1973 in their home in Alexandria. Mrs. Martin was reacquainted with her friend and former employer George M. Martin several years later and they married and moved to Leesburg. Mr. Martin passed away in 2001. She is survived by her brother Charles R. Norris III and his wife, son and grandson. She is also survived by her children, Geoffrey G. Schelhorn of Herndon his wife and three children, Robert W. Schelhorn of Winchester his wife, child and grandchild, Rebecca S. Dunlop of Herndon her husband and three children, and Thomas L. Schelhorn of Leesburg and his wife. In addition, she is survived by her stepchildren Diana Lehman and her family and Robert Martin and nieces and nephews from the blended families.
A visitation will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, January 6, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd. NE, Leesburg, VA. A serice will follow starting at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.
