Obituary

With the moonlight shining outside her window, Elizabeth "Betty" Westcott passed away at home in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 6, 2020 at the age of 92.

Betty is survived by son Stephen and Joanne Westcott, granddaughter Caitlin, grandson Stephen, and grandson Michael, son David and Charlene Westcott, grandsons William, Andrew, and Matthew, along with great-grandsons Joshua and Eli, daughter Carol Westcott Baker and Charles Baker, daughter Marie and Tom Christensen, grandson Trevor and Robbin, granddaughter Shannon and Jason, along with great-grandchildren Logan, Grady, Mackenzie, and Colin.

Born and raised in Mineola, NY, to parents Rowland and Pearl Hautsch, Betty married and raised four children.  Job transfers took the family to Spokane, WA, Presque Isle, ME, Orlando, FL, Canoga Park, CA, Cinnaminson, NJ, Occoquan, VA, and Largo, FL.  She designed and sewed stylish clothes on her sewing machine, knitted sweaters, cross-stitched pillows, volunteered in school and public libraries, took the kids to the beach, swim meets and music lessons, and cooked big Sunday dinners.

Betty blossomed in retirement while residing in Tarpon Springs. FL for 22 years.  She swam every morning and tended her beautiful garden of flowers, watching out for alligators in the bayou beyond the deck.  She joined the local art community and resumed her oil painting, taking classes and soon displaying, selling, and gifting her beautiful works of art.  She traveled the world touring more than 30 countries, the highlights being New Zealand, Scotland, Chile, Argentina, and Turkey. Traveling also took her up and down Rt. 95 from Florida to Pennsylvania for many years to care for the young grandchildren in Doylestown.

For the past ten years, Betty made a home in Ashburn, VA, cheering for the World Champions Nationals, solving cryptograms, watching favorite shows on PBS, and, of course, reading.  She enjoyed spending time with family, so proud of the accomplishments of her children and spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Betty never missed sending a thank you card or a birthday card with something special in it.

Betty will be remembered for her Christmas cookies, her art skills, being independent, being always on time, being kind-hearted, and for teaching us to be independent thinkers.

A celebration of Betty's life will occur at a later date due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Inova Loudoun Hospital staff and sincere gratitude to the gracious and unwavering caregivers at Bright Star Care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

There is peace within a garden,

a peace so deep and calm

That when the heart is troubled

it's like a soothing balm

There's life within a garden,

a life that still goes on

Filling empty places

when older plants have gone

There's glory in the garden

every time of year

Spring, summer, autumn, winter,

to fill the heart with cheer

So ever tend your garden

it's beauty to increase

For in it you'll find solace,

and in it you'll find peace.
