Obituary

Ernest A. Vuley, Jr., BG, US Army (1952-1978), of Haymarket, VA, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026. He was born on August 30, 1930, in Winooski, VT.

Ernie was a graduate of Winooski High School, earned his Bachelor ‘s Degree from the University of Vermont, Master’s Degree from George Washington University, and attended the International War College in Ontario, Canada.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Nancy; his daughter, Dianne Schaffer (husband Ray) of Ashburn, VA; his two beloved grandchildren, Robert Horstman (wife Christina) and Kuiper Schaffer; his two great grandchildren, Brooks and Landon Horstman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest A. Vuley, Sr. and Pearl Highman Vuley; and brother, Howard Vuley.

Ernie was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his distinguished career, he earned the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and was inducted to US Army Quartermaster Regiment Hall of Fame.

After military life, Ernie and Nancy retired to the Northern Virginia area. Ernie returned to his first love, sports. Ernie had played baseball and basketball for Winooski and basketball for UVM. After supporting his grandson’s basketball and baseball teams he decided to play again and joined Northern Virginia Senior Softball Teams. In 1993 Ernie began serving as a Board of Director for NVSS League. Ernie was immensely proud of his six Senior Softball World Series rings and to have played with the men on the travel team that won all six World Series.

Ernie will be laid to rest with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery in 2027.
