Eve Hardy Morrison, a Leesburg, VA resident since 1954, passed away on September 28, 2009. Born September 28, 1919 and raised in Farmville, NC, she was the daughter of Jesse William Hardy and Cora Luvenia Grimsley Hardy. She is survived by her children: Elaine M. Whitehurst of Leesburg, Eve M. Harrison of Stanley, VA, Stuart Morrison of Gaithersburg, MD and Emily Morrison of Sacramento, CA. Mrs. Morrison has 10 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and four nieces and nephews. Her husband, Dr. Samuel S. Morrison, died in 1979.
A 1936 graduate of Farmville High School, Mrs. Morrison went on to be crowned Miss Farmville in 1939. After attending Miss Hardbarger's Secretarial School in Raleigh, she was working in a Kinston, NC radio station in 1940 when she met Stephen Austill Tompkins, Jr. of Charlotte. They married in 1941. After Mr. Tompkins died in an airplane crash in 1943, she returned to her hometown of Farmville and owned and operated a floral shop.
While on vacation with her two young daughters in White Lake, NC, she met Lt. Samuel Stuart Morrison, Jr. They married in 1946. Following the births of their two children in Richmond, VA where Dr. Morrison attained his M.D., the family lived in Springfield, Ohio during his medical internship. They then moved to Leesburg, establishing their long time home on Thomas Mill Road.
Mrs. Morrison was a member of the Leesburg Presbyterian Church. She requested no services: however she would be honored by a donation made in her name to the Thomas Balch Library, 208 West Market Street, Leesburg, VA 20176. The Library is dedicated to the preservation and memory of Loudoun County's history.
