Agnes Evelyn Durden Joe, of Leesburg, VA, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012 after recently celebrating her 86th birthday.
Mrs. Joe was born in Center Hill, Florida on October 25, 1926. She graduated from High Springs High School and went on to attend a secretarial college before marrying Lawrence Palmer Joe in 1950.
As the wife of a "Navy man," Evelyn spent the next 25 years traveling the world, raising three children and giving of her time and talents to the successful efforts of many organizations. She was a world-class homemaker, ever-present mother, constant hostess, Cub Scout leader, Girl Scout camp cook, and champion of lost and stray souls (both human and animal). The results of her extraordinary abilities as a seamstress and creator of crafts graced many a stage of her children's schools as well as her grandchildren's.
In 1975, Mrs. Joe settled in Jacksonville, Florida to be near her aging mother and on the same continent as her children. In 1997, she relocated to Leesburg to be near her daughter, Carol McKenzie of Hamilton, Virginia. Mrs. Joe kept busy as an Avon representative, accompanied her children on trips, and together with her daughter, spent many happy hours volunteering at her grandson's school, Hamilton Elementary. Just days before her death, Mrs. Joe joined her daughter and grandson, Matthew, in their new home in Lovettsville.
Mrs. Joe is survived by her three children, daughter Carol McKenzie, sons Larry Joe (Carrie), and James Joe (Hong); grandchildren Matthew McKenzie, Rebecca Joe and Zhenzhen Wei. Her extended family includes Thomas McKenzie of Athens, Tennessee and grandsons Christopher and Anthony and great-grandchildren Isabella, Phoenix and Aspen, all of California.
