Floyd E. Martin, W4RW, 93 of Sterling, Virginia died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, Virginia. He was born to the late Floyd E. Martin, Sr. and Catherine Blackford Martin Anderson on January 17, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating high school in Olathe, Kansas, he served as a flight communications operator with the Army Air Corp during W.W. II. After the war, he continued as a radio operator for Trans World Airlines. In 1958, he transferred his skills to air traffic control and retired from the F.A.A. center in Leesburg, Virginia in the 1970's.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Dorothy, a daughter, Linda K. Martin, and his siblings, Lyle Martin of Nazareth, Pennsylvania and Betty Russell of Creve Coeur, Missouri.
Floyd is survived by two daughters, Peggy Martin of Front Royal, Virginia and Kathy Anthony of Leesburg, Virginia, as well as his sister, Pat Mummert of Olathe, Kansas, his brothers, Jay Anderson of Independence, Missouri, Ray Anderson and Jerry Anderson of Marion, North Carolina, Jim Martin of Indio, California, and his son-in-law Alan Anthony of Leesburg, Virginia.
Floyd was a life-long amateur radio operator earning his first call letters and station, under the guidance of his mentor Marshall Ensor, while still in high school. His ham radio antenna is a landmark along the Route 7 corridor.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1090 Sterling Road, Herndon, Virginia 20171. Interment will be Monday, September 16 at Washington National Cemetery, Suitland, Maryland.
