Obituary

Fred Seal, 86, peacefully departed this world on January 22, 2013 at his home in Ashburn, VA. Fred was born on October 20, 1926 in Benton Harbor, MI to Hazel May Hughes and Clyde Orlando Seal.

He served in the US Navy during World War II on board the USS Doneff in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Fred returned to Michigan, where he earned several awards for safe driving during his 30 plus years of driving a truck in and around Detroit. Fred was also an involved leader of his son Bob's Boy Scout Troop, forging an enduring father-son bond. While he lived in Michigan, he owned horses and dogs. He was always ready to pet any friendly dog that came his way!

After his retirement in 1989, Fred pursued his hobbies of trains and poker. He enjoyed hunting down antique model trains and creating a train layout with his brother John. He became such an adept poker player that his buddies at the Friendship Center in Westland, MI dubbed him "Fast Freddy" because he won their chips so quickly.

Fred moved "south" to Ashburn, Virginia in 2005 to be nearer to his son. He took pleasure in living in a warmer climate and was happiest wearing a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and sandals – even if it was January and the heat had to be set to 84 degrees! Fred made new friends while playing poker at the Senior Center of Leesburg and looked forward to his twice weekly games there. At age 82, Fred indulged another lifelong passion and bought himself a red convertible sports car, which he proudly and joyfully drove until his last day.

Fred was a loving father and a loyal friend. He was a good man who had an independent, generous spirit and will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Fred is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Kim Seal of Falls Church, VA; his "sister" Suzy Primeau of Westland, MI; and many extended family members that were dear to him.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday February 9, 2013 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Leesburg, VA. Fred will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery (date to be determined). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Senior Center of Leesburg, 102 North Street NW, Suite B, Leesburg, VA 20176, Attention: Fred Seal Memorial Donation.
