IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Martin
Bowman Jr.
May 20, 1949 – March 18, 2023
George Martin Bowman Jr. passed away peacefully March 18, 2023 at the age of 73. He was born May 20, 1949 in New Jersey, the son of George Martin Bowman Sr. and Ruth (Kinney) Bowman.
He graduated from Kent State University, earning a Bachelor of Business, and would go on to receive a Masters Degree. George used his education and outgoing personality to excel in the banking industry. Upon retirement from banking, his love of people and excellent customer service would lead him into a supervisory role at The Home Depot.
George loved nature and gardening. He could often be found designing and "manicuring" his gardens. He loved his family and spending time with them was a priority. There were trips to the beach, family vacations at the Jersey shore, and later trips to California and North Carolina to spend time with his beloved grandchildren. George was well known for his love of the holiday seasons. His love of decorating was evident in his "prolific" use of seasonal decorations. He loved to send care packages.
George's spirituality kept him on the straight and narrow throughout his life. His love of family kept him grounded. He never met a stranger and was always eager to lend a helping hand or ear to whomever was in need.
George married Wendy Matthews on August 12, 1972. They were married for 32 years. George and Wendy started their family life together in Chatham, New Jersey, where they welcomed their two boys Michael and James. While in Chatham they devoted themselves to youth ministry in the Presbyterian church. Life led them to Reston, Virginia in 1987 where they watched their boys grow into young men. Wendy's untimely passing in 2005 was a great loss to the family. George would go on to meet another very special person in his life, Kathy Crumrine. They became engaged on September 25, 2020. George and Kathy enjoyed spending time together, traveling, and vacationing in Williamsburg. George was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend, who was LOVED BY ALL.
He is survived by his sons Michael (Kim) Bowman, and James (Natalie) Bowman, his five grandchildren: Gwendylyn, Joseph, Matthew, Michael Jr, Aubrey, fiancee Kathy, Scott Matthews and Sue Bowman. He was predeceased by his wife Wendy, brother Robert, and sister-in-law Laurie Matthews.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 pm Thursday, March 23rd at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE. His funeral will be Friday, March 24th at Herndon United Methodist Church at 12:30 pm. An interment service for the family will follow.
