Obituary

George Charles Burghardt III, 81, passed away peacefully in Ashburn, VA on February 28, 2024 after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's and Multiple Myeloma.

George was born in New York City on March 9, 1942 to George Burghardt Jr and Henrietta Burghardt. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY and attended Gettysburg College where he met his wife of almost 60 years, Nancy (Botbyl) Burghardt.

George started off in Banking but during the Vietnam war joined the Air Force where he rose to the ranking of Captain and flew the KC-135 all around the world. This was the beginning of his passion with aviation. After serving his country, he embarked on a 30 year career in the airlines flying for Eastern, Air Jamaica, Trump Shuttle and retiring from US Airways in 2002.

In retirement he enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake, genealogy, making stain glass and his endless projects around the house.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George Burghardt Jr and Henrietta Burghardt, his older sister, Jeanne Scranton, and his youngest daughter, Dr Kimberly Burghardt Sutter. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Nancy Burghardt, his oldest beloved daughter, Jennifer Burghardt (Fiancée Jamie O'Connor), his sister-in-law Mary Dunlop, his son in law, Mick Sutter, grandchildren, Kate and Cole Sutter.
