Obituary

G. Dewey Hill, Jr., two term Mayor of Leesburg, died at home on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Mr. Hill had been ill for several years prior to his death.

Mr. Hill was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia August 23, 1920 to Florence Glover and George Dewey Hill, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Kelley Hill, and one daughter, Rev. Dr. Sharan Jeannette Hill, both of Leesburg.

He also is survived by one sister, Betty Jane Kisner, from Charles Town, West Virginia; a brother, Joseph Daniel Hill of Ithaca, New York. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Merchant and Ida Mary Noland both of Charles Town, West Virginia.

Dewey graduated from Harpers Ferry High School and was recruited to play football for the University of Virginia where he was a pre-med student. His studies were interrupted by the call to serve his country, which he did so proudly as a medic in the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean conflict.

He followed those medical inclinations by serving as the first president of the Loudoun County Rescue Squad.

At the time of his retirement, Mr. Hill had one of the largest Nationwide Insurance Agencies within the State of Virginia. It was while he served in this capacity that he was elected to two terms as Mayor of Leesburg.

In addition to his mayoral duties, Mr. Hill also served on the Airport Commission; the Loudoun County Preservation & Restoration Society; and he, along with Kenneth Rollins, spearheaded the efforts of the Northern Virginia Water and Sewer board, providing the comprehensive and excellent water system that currently supplies Leesburg.

Mr. Hill had recently been honored as having been a Mason for sixty years. He and his family were members of the Loudoun Golf and Country Club for many years.

Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, August 6, 2008, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Masonic Service will be held the same evening starting at 7:30 pm.

The funeral service will be held at the Leesburg United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 11:00 am with the Rev. James Wishmeyer officiating. Interment will follow the service at Ebenezer Cemetery near Round Hill, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Leesburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1178, Leesburg, VA, 20177.
