Harold B. Githens, of Ashburn, was peacefully called home to be with the Lord at the tender age of 100, in the wee morning hours on January 4, 2016.
The youngest of eight children, Harold was born to Edward and Caroline (Fisher) Githens on August 31, 1915 in Bucks County, PA. Growing up in Philadelphia, PA, Harold attended the Lutheran Church on Frankford Avenue, sold apples by the roadside, and attended the John Wannamaker Academy before being called to serve in the European Theatre of World War II as an Ordinance Officer. After his return from the war he began his career as a Rehabilitation Specialist for the Department of Veterans Affairs. A disabled veteran himself, Harold specialized in the rehabilitation of paraplegics and quadriplegics, and studied Psychology at Temple University. In 1949, he married his life love Mary Taylor. Together they had two daughters, Mary Ellen Githens and Carolyn Elizabeth Fisher. They settled in Haddonfield, NJ.
Harold enjoyed much levity, a glass of scotch or two, going out to eat and above all, helping others.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Githens, as well as his parents and 7 siblings. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Mary and Carolyn (Cathy), his stepson John Kersic and 4 grandchildren, Meghan and Bryan Marville, Matthew Fisher and Katie (Fisher) Ingles, as well as 3 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road, NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 at 1 p.m. on January 14, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, Hal would probably appreciate it greatly if you would do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some poor unfortunate soul in his name.
