Mrs. Helen Vandevanter, 87, the wife of Brig. Gen. Elliott Vandevanter Jr., died Sunday March 16, after a short illness.
Mrs. Vandevanter, a 46-year resident of Leesburg, was a member of St. James Episcopal church and had lived at 17 N. Wirt St. and, prior to that, 105 W. Market St., before moving to Meadow Glen Assisted Living.
Helen was born Helen Garland Henry in Cleburne, Texas, on May 31, 1920. She attended St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va., and graduated from Mount Vernon Junior College in Alexandria.
In 1948, she married then-Col. Vandevanter, a World War II pilot. They lived in Alexandria,Va., Tampa, Fla., and Paris, France until 1961 when they moved to Leesburg.
Mrs. Vandevanter is survived by her brother Blake Henry of New York, New York; her daughter Sally Eliot VanDevanter of Westport, Conn., and grand-daughter Elizabeth Brooks Seaver; her son Brooks Blakeney Vandevanter of Leesburg; and her son Peter Henry Vandevanter of Charlotte, N.C., daughter-in-law Frances Janice Vandevanter and grandchildren Willis Andrew Vandevanter and Ruth Barnes Vandevanter.
