Obituary

Herman Joseph Hassler Jr, 82, passed away on December 26, 2025, in Ashburn, Virginia. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, Herman lived a life marked by service, adventure, and deep love for his family.

Born on December 11, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, Herman graduated in 1961 from Saint Patrick’s High School. At the age of 17, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. During his three years of service, he achieved the rank of Petty Officer Third Class—a testament to his dedication and leadership.

Following his military service, Herman embarked on a distinguished career with the Central Intelligence Agency’s Directorate of Operations as well as the Office of Training and Education. He played a vital role in some challenging environments, working to support U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives. His assignments took him across Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East—regions where he left an indelible mark through his courage and commitment.

Despite the demands of his career and frequent travel around the globe, Herman remained deeply grounded in what mattered most: his family. He shared 59 loving years with his wife Dolores Hassler. Together they raised two daughters—Renee Zahora, husband Steve and Michelle Phillips, husband Jesse—and built a home filled with warmth and laughter. He took immense pride in his three grandsons: Mick Zahora, Tyler and Jaxon Phillips.

Herman had a vibrant personality that shone through in every aspect of his life. He was known for being a strong-willed individual who took charge when it mattered most. Yet beneath that strength was a man who delighted in simple joys: collecting coins or miniature military soldiers; listening to show tunes that stirred memories; watching classic films; exploring archeological wonders; and indulging in a good burger—even at fine dining establishments.

A lifelong admirer of Mickey Mouse and all things Disney, Herman found pure happiness vacationing at Walt Disney World with his family. These trips were more than just vacations—they were cherished traditions that brought generations together under one magical roof.

Herman's legacy is one of unwavering devotion—to country through military and intelligence service; to family through decades of love and support; and to life itself through curiosity, humor, and joy.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who honor lives lived with purpose and heart.
