IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard "Howie"
Philip Roman
March 21, 2025
Howard ("Howie") Philip Roman, died on March 21, 2025, surrounded by family, in Reston, VA. He was 91. His long, full life revolved around family, faith, and sports. Howie was born in 1933 in New York Mills, NY, the son of Walter and Beatrice Roman.
Howie took on responsibility at a young age, helping his single mother raise his twin brothers and sister under difficult financial circumstances. He excelled in multiple sports in high school. Howie met the love of his life, Nanette ("Nan") Heysler, on a blind date, and married her in 1957, while on leave from a U.S. Army posting in Germany. He and Nan began their family in upstate New York, but in the early 1960s they settled in Vienna, VA, when his job with IBM brought him to Washington, DC. After IBM transferred him back to upstate New York, he asked to be transferred again to the Washington area, and in 1968, he and Nan again settled in Vienna, where they raised their six children for the next 20 or so years. The Roman household was a raucous one full of laughter and love that attracted extended family and the Romans' many friends. Howie and Nan spent countless hours shepherding their children to practices and games at sports fields across Fairfax County (making sure someone from the family was always present to cheer on the Roman kids), as well as to Sunday Mass at St. Mark's Catholic Church and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Howie was well known around Vienna as a dedicated and enthusiastic coach of numerous local football, basketball, and baseball teams. In the early 1990s, after his retirement from IBM, he and Nan relocated to Ashburn, VA, where they were founding members of St. Theresa Catholic Church and Howie worked various jobs that allowed him to interact with the community. Howie most loved spending time with his family and watching sports, sometimes setting up multiple TVs so as not to miss a game. He rooted the hardest for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, James Madison University Dukes, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Washington sports teams, especially the Washington Redskins/Commanders. Howie also was an avid golfer. He will be greatly missed but always remembered for his passion for life, abiding love for his family, and wry sense of humor.
Howie is predeceased by his beloved wife Nan and daughter Kelly, and his siblings Maynard, Ronald, and Janice. He leaves behind his son Jeff (Sharon) of Great Falls, VA, son Marc (Rachel) of Annapolis, MD, daughter Tracy (Cliff) of Washington, DC, daughter Joelle (Alan) of Arlington, VA, and son Brady (Kendra) of Sterling, VA, along with his grandchildren Caitlin, Connor, Christopher, Ben, Audrey, Olivia, Kristina, Levi, and Madilyn, and a host of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, VA, on April 2, at 1:00 pm, with a reception to follow immediately after at The Bungalow Lakehouse in Sterling, VA. Arrangements by Colonial Funeral Home, Leesburg, VA.
