James E. Bartley, (Jim) age 87, a resident of Ashburn, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 in the Capital Caring Adler Center in Aldie, Virginia. He was born July 14, 1930 in Larned, Kansas and grew up in Great Bend, Kansas. He was a 1948 graduate of Great Bend High School. He retired in 1992 as President of the National Industrial Transportation League in Washington, DC where he worked for thirty-four years. Prior to going to work for the NIT League he worked for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad from 1948 to 1958. Jim served in the Kansas National Guard and the U.S.Army Reserve from 1948 to 1968 when he retired as a Captain. Jim was a member of the National Press Club, Washington, DC. , the Assoc. of ICC practitioners, and the Traffic Clubs of Washington, DC and Chicago. He was named Man of the Year 1990 by Chilton's Distribution Magazine.
Jim maintained his membership in the Wichita Masonic Lodge #99 where he was a member from 1954 until his death.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid collector of firearms, pocket knives, coins, and duck decoys. He also enjoyed competitive skeet and trap shooting.
Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris (nee Box) also a former resident of Great Bend; his three children, Doug (Lynda), Carol (Chris), and Scott; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his two sisters Elizabeth of Russell, Kansas and Jean of McPherson, Kansas. He was predeceased by his parents Valentine and Ed Bartley and his brother Lawrence.
A gathering of remembrance will be held at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg on December 28, 2017 at 10:30 am.
