James F. Cottone
James Faro Cottone, 91, of Leesburg VA, passed away of natural causes on December 20, 2022.
He was born Faro Giampapa in Lodi, New Jersey, on September 3, 1931. He grew up in New
Jersey and joined the U.S. Navy in 1951 where he completed the Electronics Technician Program. He served aboard the submarine tender USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS 16} and submarines Trutta (SS 421) and Thornback (SS 418) as a radio and radar technician. He was honorably discharged in 1955, having earned a Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
James then attended Pennsylvania State University and earned a BS in engineering in 1960. He became self-employed as a consulting engineer and in 1975 he received his USPTO Bar License and practiced as a registered patent agent in the business of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law in Arlington, Virginia. He was a member of the National Association of Patent Practitioners, had several inventions to his name, and wrote industry articles for the NAPP.
In addition to his academic degrees, James held an FCC commercial radiotelephone license and an FAA commercial pilot's license. He served as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council of Purcellville, Virginia. In his later years, Jim loved enjoying nature on his "farm" near Leesburg, attending auctions, and remaining involved in electronics.
James was preceded in death by his four brothers: Joseph, Frank, Vincent, and Anthony, and his three sisters: Grace, Angela, and Estelle. He is survived by eight nephews and eight nieces.
He will be interred with military honors at the Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Virginia on February 27th at 11am.
