On March 18, 2022, James W. Johnson Jr. was called home to be with our Lord and Savior. James, or Jim as most people called him, was born on November 2, 1949 to James Weldon Johnson Sr. and Sylvia Marie Johnson, who preceded him in death. James graduated from Southern High School in Baltimore, MD.
James is survived by his wife of 47 years, Debra C. Johnson, and their children Jermaine Johnson, his wife Sarah (Ripmaster) Johnson, Justin Johnson, and his wife Anna Johnson. He too is survived by his daughter Yolanda N. Johnson and his son James W. Johnson III. "PopPop" was a bright light to his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Eric Johnson, his wife Muriel Johnson, Kirk Smalls his wife Wanda Smalls, and Craig Smalls and his wife Felice Hawkins-Smalls. Additionally, he had a loving impact on numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim served as a Corporal in The United States Marine Corps and is a Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War. After the service, he began working at the Social Security Administration where he met his wife, Debra. Most recently employed at BMW of Sterling in Sterling, Virginia, James went on to have a well-respected career in the automotive business for 41 years. He valued each of the friendships he made along the way. James' greatest joys in life were spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed being on the water, fishing, playing baseball, eating seafood, telling stories, traveling, and spending time with his wife in their new home.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 8:00 am to 9:00 am at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd., NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 where a service will begin at 9:00 am. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at Culpeper National Cemetery.
