Obituary

James Hubert McKimmey, Lucketts area farmer and former Leesburg businessman, died Friday, February 20, 2009, at Inova Loudoun Hospital, Lansdowne. He was 85 and for the past year had lived at Morningside House of Leesburg.

A lifelong resident of Lucketts, Mr. McKimmey owned and operated the former McKimmey's Feed Service on Harrison Street, Leesburg, for 25 years. The building in which the business was housed, the former C.C. Saffer Mill, was moved north one block in 1982 and became Tuscarora Mill Restaurant, the centerpiece of Market Station. The feed and grain business then operated in a new building on South Street until its closing in 1988.

Born August 16, 1923 to the late Birtrand Willard and Lela Hanes Trussell McKimmey, Mr. McKimmey also raised beef cattle and crops on his Spinks Ferry Road farm for over 60 years. He graduated from the former Leesburg High School in 1940 and was married to the former Frances Lee Arnold of Waterford; she predeceased him in 1997.

Mr. McKimmey was an elder and lifelong member of Faith Chapel Presbyterian Church at Lucketts. During his lifetime, he had also been a member of the Lucketts Ruritan Club and had served on agriculture-related committees and commissions in Loudoun. The Lucketts Community Fair honored him in 2006 with a living history display that featured his life and contributions to the community.

He is survived by his son, David Arnold McKimmey, Sr., of Lucketts; his daughter, Karolyn Whiteley of Leesburg; five grandsons, Jason, John and David, Jr. McKimmey and Hunter and Hanes Whiteley; and five great-grandchildren, Elysia, Grant Alexander, Tyler, Logan and Emma Whiteley. Also surviving are a sister Rowena Dronenburg of Dickerson, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd. NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are Wednesday, February 25, 2009 starting at 11:00 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, followed by interment in Union Cemetery, Leesburg. The Reverend Fletcher Hutcheson will be officiating.
