Obituary

A soft light to the world, a bright beam to those who loved him. James A. Sutphin passed away on January 5, 2010. James, known as Sut, was born in Loudoun County, Virginia on July 16, 1936 to parents James H. and Geneva M. (Christian) Sutphin. He was one of three children raised in a farming community. Farming led the family to live on farms in Lincoln, Leesburg, Hamilton and Selma in Lucketts. As a young boy, Sut grew to love farm life and spending time with the animals. He enjoyed playing baseball. He was a graduate of Loudoun County High School. As a grown man, Sut continued to enjoy the quieter things in life. When life got too busy, he was known to spend time rabbit hunting. On a quiet afternoon, he could be found watching a good baseball game or an old western on TV. Many residents knew him as the local meat cutter in Safeway. But of all the things he enjoyed, he obtained the most happiest from being with his two grandsons. Although he is gone, he will be remembered every time one takes a quiet walk across a field or hears the sound of farm animals or the whack of a baseball bat as it meets the ball.

Sut is survived by his mother Geneva M. (Christian) Sutphin; daughters Sharon E. Basil of Charles Town, WV and Pamela J. Sutphin of Harpers Ferry, WV; sister Margaret Dorgan of Winchester, VA; two grandsons and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father James H. Sutphin, son Steven A. Sutphin and brother David C. Sutphin.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Rd NE, Leesburg, VA 20176 on Friday, January 8, 2010 between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will start at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Leesburg, VA.
