Obituary

Jean Burdett, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the age of 92. She was surrounded by family at the time of her death. Jean was born in Wimbledon, England, on November 8, 1923. She was the youngest of three children.

During World War II, she married Harry W. Burdett, Jr., an American soldier, and came to America in 1946. They started their life in the U.S. in Harry's home state of New Jersey, moved to North Carolina in 1950, and in 1958 settled in Norfolk, Virginia, later moving to Virginia Beach. There they raised their family of 5 children. Jean was widowed in 1970 and retired from the Bank of Virginia in 1987. At that time, she moved to Northern Virginia to live with her daughter's family and resided there until the time of her death.

Jean spent her retirement years helping out with her grandchildren, traveling, working part time for 16 years in the finance office of Mt. Vernon historical site, and volunteering at a number of places to include Belgrove Plantation in Middletown, Virginia, and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. She was a member of Tea and Roses in Winchester, Virginia, a group of English born friends who shared their heritage and common interests; and she enjoyed knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, watching old movies, and, above all, spending time with her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren loved to hear Jean's stories about being a teenager and young adult in England during World War II.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, James and Florence Edwards, her brothers, Albert and James Edwards, and her husband. She is survived by her five children and their spouses Rita Donato (Henry), Barbara Ward, George S. Burdett (Debbie), Toni York (Gerald), and Jackie Livingston (Mike); 12 grandchildren and their spouses Keith Berenguer (Kate), Doug Berenguer (Monica), Chris Ward, Philip Ward (Amy), Kevin Ward (Christi), George H. Burdett, Anne Marie Burdett, Brandon York, Chelsea York, Brianna Lowe (Jacob), West Livingston, and Rachel Livingston; and 17 great grandchildren Ellie and Nicholas Berenguer; Camden Berenguer; Kaleigh Ward; Ryan, Brooklyn, Dennis, and Madelyn Ward; Chelsea, Michael, Derick, Melissa, and Steffanie Ward; Jordan and Lilianna York; Abigail York; and Jackson Lowe.
