Obituary

JERENE GARGES JONES SCALLY died on August 19, 2012 at the Johnson Center/Falcons Landing in
Sterling Virginia. Jerry was born on Christmas Day 1929 in Juneau Alaska when it was still a territory of
the U.S. She was an Army brat and an Army wife.

She married Thomas T. Jones, USMA '48, in Tokyo Japan where her father was stationed. Six months
after their marriage, Tom was part of the 1st Cavalry Division invasion at Pusan, Korea. Tom was
captured by the North Koreans in the battle of Kasan. He was MIA as he was forced marched over 200
miles north for more than 3 weeks. Tom, along with 3 other U.S. Army soldiers escaped their captors just
3 miles south of the 38th Parallel, and they were the first official POW escapees of the conflict. Tom died
in 1994 at the VA hospital in Martinsburg WV, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Jerry had leading roles in amateur theater most of her adult life. She studied art in Tokyo, in Virginia and
at the Abbott School of Art in Washington D.C. She was a member of the Northern Virginia Art League,
the Vienna Art Society and was a featured and award winning artist in area shows. In 1978, Jerry was an
artist in residence at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV. She also gave private art
instructions at her studio in Annandale VA.

In 1996 she moved to Falcons Landing where she met and married Paul J. Scally, USAF Ret'd. Paul won
the NCAA light heavy weight collegiate boxing championship in 1941 for Penn State. Together they sang
and performed in many Falcons Landing theatrical presentations. They were among the charter
members of "WAFL," an organization of residents of Falcons Landing who met and married there. After
nearly 13 years of a very happy marriage, Paul passed away in February 2012.

She is predeceased by her father, Philip Robison Garges, USMA '24, her mother, Estelle Tyler Garges of
Aldie VA, and her husbands Thomas Tytherleigh Jones and Paul Joseph Scally. She is survived by 3 siblings, 4
children, 2 daughters-in-law, 2 step children, 10 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Daniel Garges of Rockville MD, Nona Redd of Dawson GA, and Philip Garges of Annandale VA. Her surviving children are Thomas Jones of Angola Africa, Andrew Jones of Hamilton VA, Christopher Jones of Aldie
VA, and Cameron Kauffman of Springfield VA. Her surviving daughters-in-laws are Maggie Jones of Hamilton VA and Renee Jones of Angola Africa. Her surviving step-children are Susan Slye of Alexandria
VA and Steven Scally of Philadelphia PA.

She died a very very happy lady.

The viewing will be at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg Virginia from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on
Tuesday August 28th. The funeral Mass will be held at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church in
Leesburg at 10:00am on Wednesday August 29th. The burial will follow the Mass and will be at
Emmanuel Cemetery in Middleburg Virginia.
