Joan D. Atkins passed away on November 18, 2009. She was born in Washington, D.C. on May 27, 1928 to proud parents Craigen Ward and Margaret (Griner) Donaldson. She and her family continued living in Washington, D.C. where she attended school. After graduation, she went on to attend George Washington University where she met Thomas R. Atkins. They were later married in August of 1950 and continued living in the Washington, D.C. area. They found a house they could call home; living there for almost 50 years. Together they raised 2 children. She shared her religious values with her children. Always wanting to do what was best for her family, Joan chose to be a stay at home mom until her children were out of high school. Only then did she make the decision to work outside of the home. Joan chose to work in the secretarial field, retiring from George Mason University. She enjoyed retirement spending the time with her husband. Joan and her husband were blessed to have experienced what turned out to be one of the great highlights of there lives. They were able to visit Scotland, the home of her Scottish roots. While there, her husband lovingly presented to her a beautiful ring, which she always cherished. Needing something to fill the empty nest, they invited their poodles into their home. The poodles grew to be like extra children. Joan looked forward to the times when her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would fill her home with fun and laughter on the holidays.

Although she has gone to a better home, her memories will continue to live on in those she leaves behind. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 starting at 2:00 p.m. at Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
