Obituary

Joan Maio, born on August 18, 1935, in Arlington, VA, peacefully passed away on October 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Joan's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Domenic, and her adoring children, Mary Lisa Nikolet (Miles), Julie Kasuba (Frank), and Laurie Sanger (David). Joan treasured her grandchildren, Domenic, Kristin, Lauren, Christopher, and Brandon, who brought her immeasurable joy. Known for her warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit, she was a cherished mother, grandmother (fondly known as "Fluffy"), and friend.

A devout Catholic, Joan was deeply committed to her faith and the values it instilled in her, which guided her throughout her life and shaped the loving environment she created for her family. Her compassionate heart was evident in her every action; she was empathetic and generous.  She always cared for others, and made everyone she met feel valued and appreciated.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and Harvey Daly; sister Rita (Peach) Burch; brother Jack Daly; and cherished babies, Gregg Christopher and Michelle Teresa, who were welcomed into the arms of angels too soon. She was also preceded in death by other close family and friends who held a special place in her heart. Their memories lived on in her stories and the love she shared with those around her.
Throughout much of her life, she dedicated herself to caring for her family, allowing her husband to focus on his military career. Later in life, she held several part-time jobs, all of which centered around building relationships—truly her gift. Additionally, she volunteered for hospice, reflecting her unwavering compassion and commitment to helping others.

Joan enjoyed collecting antique dolls, shopping (an avid QVC fan), and nurturing her friendships. She had a remarkable talent for staying connected with loved ones, always making time for a call or visit to brighten someone's day. Her home was a warm haven where everyone felt welcomed and loved.

Joan will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love and joy will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

A funeral service and an internment will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery on July 23, 2025, at 11:00am, in tandem with that of her beloved husband, Domenic.
